It has been recently announced that Uyinene Mrwtyana was raped and murdered. The University of Cape Town student was last seen on a Saturday when she went to go fetch her parcel at the post office. The man linked to her rape and murder was sentenced. According to News24, the State says that on the day when Uyinene disappeared, she went to go check on the parcel but the electricity was off. She was told to come back later. The student was then sexually assaulted when she came back. The man who attacked, knocked her unconscious when she was fighting back. The man used a scale.
The incident made women feel unsafe in places including schools, with the recent kidnapping of the 6-year-old girl. Some women said what places they don’t feel safe in. Some of the women state that they don’t feel safe in places such malls, schools, post offices and homes. One tweep says, “At the bus stop trying not get raped and killed! At school trying not to get raped and killed! In your home trying not to get raped and killed. At The F’ing Post Office trying not to get raped and killed! We are not safe…”
One tweep included churches in the equation. The tweep says, “we’re not safe in the streets. We’re not safe in our homes. We’re not safe at the post office, the mall, our workplaces, our schools, our churches. WE ARE NOT SAFE.” One tweep says, “Who can we trust? Not a post office employee, your own husband, your boyfriend, your favourite uncle, the nice bus driver- NO ONE. I am shocked by what is happenin in this country. We are not safe anywhere.” One tweep says, “I’m so numb…We are not safe at all. Not anywhere.Inside our homes, restaurants, bus stop and taxi rank. Even at a post office, where one goes to fetch a parcel.”
