The Jazz music singer and hit maker, Lira, has become the first African woman to have been given her own Barbie doll. This is part of Barbie’s 60th anniversary campaign called #MoreRoleModels, the campaign was started to honour role models with dolls of their own. The singer has joined other international greats such as United States of America filmmaker and producer Ava Duvernay, actress Yara Shahidi and tennis player Naomi Osaka.
Lira announced her doll today (Tuesday) on her social media accounts. The Barbie doll can be seen with Lira’s well-known short hair and a top that was made by South African fashion designer, Sello Medupe and earrings that were made by a South African jewellery creator. Tweeps were excited when they heard the news of the first African Barbie doll. One tweep says, “What a time to be alive. Lira has become the first African to have a Barbie in her honour. This has really made my day.”
One tweep says, “We officially have one now and it’s the beautiful and talented @Miss_Lira…” One tweep says, “They couldn’t have chosen a better person, she’s so sweet, talented and knows how to hit a high note.” Radio personality Glen Lewis says that she is the soundbite of the day for his radio show. “Soundbite of the day: Musician Lira has become the first African to have a Barbie doll in her honor,” says Glen Lewis. One tweep says, “Oh man I will get the @miss_lira Barbie for all the lil people in my life and myself…”
