An 11-year-old boy from Mpumalanga has showed an excellent example of sportsmanship. The boy handed his medal to a person he thought deserved it more. The kind act by the boy, Herco Radley, who is a grade 6 student at Laerskool Trichardt was started by an instance that occurred at an athletics event in Secunda on the 10th of February.
The young man was participating in the 150 metre hurdles at the West Circuit athletics competition. It was stated that only the first three athletes from each event would head to the following round. The event was hosted by the Govan Mbeki municipality. Herco Radley says, “The gun went off and we started running. There was a boy from Curro School in Secunda far in front of all of us. At the last hurdle his knee hit the framework and then fell to the ground. Due to this we passed him and he eventually finished sixth.” The winners got their medals and letters of acknowledgement for the next round.
While the boy who fell was getting medical attention, the 11-year-old walked towards him and put the medal that he received around the injured boy’s neck. He also sent back his qualification letter, the officials gave it to the boy who got injured. Herco Radley says he was hurt by the incident because he knows that the other student should have won.
