PARKTOWN – Despite a man who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a woman in Atteridgeville on Friday, 23 August 2019, a man who assaulted his girlfriend was also stabbed on the same day by the victim’s son and died at the Stinkwater Clinic in Temba. The 14-year-old boy was arrested and later released to his parent’s custody. These are highlights of serious and violent crimes perpetrated against women and police are appealing to communities to immediately report these crimes which mostly occur in domestic violence related incidents.
Johannes Mabethwa, who was sentenced at the North Gauteng High Court on Friday, 23 August 2019, strangled a woman whose body was dumped at Schurweberg and Church Streets in Atterigdeville in November last year. The deceased was reported as missing before her body was found. Post-mortem results showed that she had been strangled. In order to hide his crime, he dumped the body. Police gathered information that later lead to his arrest with the help of the witnesses. He was then linked to the murder and convicted.
In another incident that occurred on Friday, late at night, a 14 year-old boy witnessed violence perpetrated against his mother who was being assaulted by her boyfriend. The youngster then allegedly took out a knife and stabbed the man in the upper body. The man was then taken to the clinic where he later died. Although this young boy must be responsible for his actions, he also became a victim when he saw violence perpetrated against his mother.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela is also on a roadshow engaging with the Gauteng communities to discuss criminal issues including those that are affecting women, children and the elderly.
