The Health Minister has acknowledged that 21 boys have passed away by the traditional initiation season at the Eastern Cape. The premier of the Eastern Cape guided certain of officials of the government and traditional leaders. He guided them on a tour to initiation schools in the place.
The Minister of Health, Minister Zweli Mkhize, said a large number of the boys passed away due to dehydration. This is supposedly due to the thought that initiates should not get water. “This is due to the belief that initiates should not get water. So, before and after the ceremony they don’t get water. This leads to mental confusion, electrolyte imbalance and renal failure,” says the Minister of Health.
Minister Zweli Mkhize says this type of practice seemed to be secure in the winter months. The minister says they have recommended that initiation be limited to winter months only. “In the same area, no deaths are recorded in winter every year,” says Minister Zweli Mkhize. The government will be contributing water to every initiation school in the area. They have also stated that they will speak to school authorities to make sure all iniates get water. The safety conditions the initiation schools will also be examined.
