A 48 year old man is facing life in jail after he brutally murdered his girlfriend on the 04 November 2019 at 13:00 in Tshepong, Theunissen.
The body of a 45-year-old Maria Morakane Mkhuamathe was found in the house of the boyfriend by her two daughters who immediately reported the matter to the police. Morakane was found on the bed strangled with a rope, her hands and feet tied with cuffs.
A case of Murder was registered and assigned to Sergeant Godfrey Magwa of Theunissen Detectives. He made an arrest shortly after the accused left the crime scene. He worked around the clock and gathered all relevant information to ensure that justice for Morakane prevails.
The suspect Godfrey Itumeleng Sani has since been in custody and was found guilty on Thursday, 13 May 2021 then later sentenced to life imprisonment by the Virginia High Court.
The Provincial Commissioner of Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane welcomed the sentence and commended the Investigating Officer for the diligent work which led to a lengthy sentence for the accused. “Gender Based Violence is one of our priority crimes which sees women and children being abused and murdered either by their partners and/or relatives who should be protecting them. This sentence will serve as a deterrent to others that women are meant to be loved and protected not abused.
