The school’s philosophy and whether or not it matches your needs
The organisation and management of every school is underpinned by a particular philosophy towards education, and the approach to how they teach learners. It is important that there is a balance in terms of promoting a combination of academic excellence, social development and emotional well-being, though each school will put a slight emphasis on one or the other.
My child is an individual and is unique – will the school value and appreciate that?
If you have more than one child, then you know that every child is different – some are outgoing, whilst others are quiet and reserved. It is important to choose a school that will cater for your child’s unique needs.
The school environment
Pay close attention to the learners and whether they are confident and happy. Check to see if the school displays learners’ work in a manner that says ‘we value and celebrate our pupils’ hard work’. Does the work covered in the curriculum include a wide range of subjects or is it just writing and mathematics? This will give you an insight into whether the school values the wider curriculum or just focuses on getting pupils to pass tests in the core subjects.
Visit and observe schools
We suggest that you contact the schools you are interested in and make an appointment for a visit. If possible, tour the schools during regular school hours and visit a few classes, see how the lessons are done and the teachers and learners interact.
