Today, eight accused between the ages of 22 and 44 appeared in the Stilfontein Magistrates’ Court for possession of gold concentrate. They will remain in custody until their next court appearance on Thursday, 10 January 2019.
The accused’s court appearance emanated from their arrests through a multi-disciplinary stabilisation operation that was conducted in Khuma on Thursday, 6 December 2018. During this operation, 1 ton of crude gold were seized after being found in possession of the accused. An abandoned transformer as well as a Volkswagen Amarok was also seized by police. Further investigation revealed that the recovered vehicle was stolen in September this year in Germiston.
During another stabilisation operation on Friday, 7 December 2018, focussing on enforcement of the Liquor Act, 30-year-old Sineth Themba Dywili was arrested for illegal possession of firearm and ammunition in Kanana Location near Orkney. He appeared in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court today, and was remanded in custody until Tuesday, 18 December 2018.
It was during the operation that dangerous weapons such as knives were seized.
The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane commended the police for their commitment that led to the successes. She said that multi-disciplinary operations will continue also as part of the Safer Festive Season Operations to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book.
