Social media is always used to communicate with other people in the world. It makes the world seem small because we can speak about what’s happening in our world with other people. However, it has brought social media influencers to the table.
A social media influencer is a person who speaks about a certain topic they know with others, thereby becoming famous for their certain topic. Some South Africans have had the honour to make a mark through social media. These are the social media influencers you should know:
1.Mihlali Ndamase
Mihlali Ndamase is a social media influencer who is famous for her makeup tutorial vlogs on Youtube. She is a professional makeup artist (she has a certificate to prove it). She was born in Kokstad, Kwazulu-Natal. This gorgeous makeup artist was born on the 29th of November in 1996. She got her makup certification from Leaders in The Science of Fashion (LITSOF).
She is currently studying for her BA in Strategic Brand Communication at Vega School. Mihlali grew her makeup business through her Youtube channel and Instagram page. She currently has approximately 639K followers on her Instagram and approximately 140K subscribers on her Youtube. She has also worked with several major brand such as MAC cosmetic and Samsung.
2.Thick Leeyonce
Thick Leyonce is a social media influencer known for her modelling. Thick Leeyonce is a photographer, and a plus size blogger and model. The inspirational model was born in the North West, in 1993. She is the cousin of the famous media personality and rapper, Boity Thulo. She had the honour to strut on the runway of the SA fashion Week in 2017.
A tweet of hers replying to a body shamer in 2017 was liked by American musician Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande. Her Instagram page has garnered approximately 438K followers and her Twitter account has approximately 188.4K followers. She also a cofounder of a clothing brand called LeeBex.
3.Clara Chimeloane
Clara Chimeloane is a social media influencer known for her makeup work. The makeup artist was born in Soweto, Johannesburg. She started working as a sales artist in a cosmetology shop. Clara has touched the faces of a lot of the famous people that we know. She worked with celebrities such as Bonang Matheba, Nomzamo Mbatha, Thuli Phongolo and Boity Thulo. Bonang has been praise Clara’s work.
However, she is famously known for touch the face of the “mother of the nation,” Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. She did her makeup on her 80th birthday celebration. This made the public think that the political icon went for a surgery.
4.Kim Jayde
Kim Jayde is one lucky social media influencer who got her job on the famous entertainment channel, MTV Base, through her social media page. She was discovered by the talent manage of MTV Base South Africa. Even though the beauty is South African social media influencer, she was born in Bulawayo, Harare (a town in Zimbabwe). Kim came to South Africa, after she finished her high school career, to further her studies.
She received her Honours Degree in Social Work at the University of Stellenbosch. The influencer also pursued a part-time modelling career when during her tertiary studies. Kim worked with famous brands such as Revlon. There was a rumour spreading around that she was dating the “Touch My Blood” hitmaker, AKA. Her Instagram page has approximately 125K followers and her Twitter page has approximately 17.7K followers.
5.Karabo Mokgogo
Karabo Mokgokgo is a social media influencer that is famously known for her inspirational work on Twitter. The social media icon was born on the 21st of June in 1994. She works in the law department during the day and is a social media influencer by night. Her website says that she has a passion for photography, beauty, gadgets, music, politics and fashion.
She uses her social media page to inspire people. She insists on not showing people her face, which has made people speculate how she looks facially. She is one of the first social media influencers in South Africa to have reached 1 Million followers. She is part of the Top 30 South African Twitter Accounts and part of the Top 10 Female Accounts. Her social media influence has allowed her to travel around the world in collaboration with other brands. Karabo has approximately 1.8 Million followers on her Twitter page.

Keabetswe Jan, known on Twitter as @akreana_, is famous for her 2019 “O Je Wa Ke eng” tweet. Her tweet has allowed a lot of people to get job opportunities. The responses to her tweet from young adults explaining their unemployment lead to her providing these job opportunities. She has worked with the Ayana Magazine and Koena clothing. She has started her own organisation called the O Jewa Keng Foundation. The recent social media influencer has 93.9K followers.
