Netcare 911 responded to reports of a collision on the N17 at the Gosforth Toll Plaza, near Rand Airport in Germiston.
Reports from the scene indicate that multiple vehicles were involved in a collision.
When paramedics arrived on scene patients and vehicles were scattered across the road.
The scene was assessed and sadly two people had sustained fatal injuries and were declared deceased on the scene.
Eight other patients sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious and were treated on scene.
Due to the nature of one of the patients injuries an air ambulance helicopter was called to the scene to airlift the patient to hospital.
Once treated all the patients were transported by various ambulance services to hospital for further treatment.
