Senior Manager Suspended For Alleged Drug Party In KZN Prison. The conclusion was made publicised at a press conference in Cape Town today (Wednesday).
Dunraj Mohan, Durban Westville prison’s senior manager for corporate services, was suspended after video recordings of inmates made rounds on the internet since last month. The conclusion was made publicised at a press conference in Cape Town today (Wednesday). Ronald Lamola, the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, also spoke about the numerous misconducts that have been identified in other prisons.
The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services has acknowledged that the first recording shows officers starting a fight between prisoners, the officers gave the prisoners their security tools. The video recording is said to have been recorded on the 29th of July 2018. “…there was action taken by then acting head of centre, Ms Ndlovu NJ, who issued contemplation letters to the officials involved. It was on August 3 2018 that these officials were eventually suspended, pending finalisation of the investigation,” says Ronald Lamola.
The suspension was later removed on the 23rd of October 2018, the suspended officers were then appointed to areas were they would not be in direct contact with prisoners. He then said the examination has been carried out and given to the relevant authorities for a go ahead. However, there was no implication after the examination.
The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services says the prisoners who have been snorting some white material are Sanele Nyalane (who is in prison for 15 years with a case of robbery and aggravation), Ruwain Meer (who is sentenced with life in prison for a case of murder) and Langa Gumede (serving 15 years in prison with a case of robbery and aggravation). He says the event happened on the 14th of June which prompted a raid in the prison cell.
They found 41 tablets of mandrax, 334 dagga slopes, seven dagga packages, eight ear pieces, four sim cards, six cell phones, four cell phone chargers, one flash drive, one smoking pipe and R23 in cash. The three men that have been found smoking some white material were sent to C-max prison in Kokstad. Dumisani Makhaye was place as the acting area commissioner, he is expected to stabilise the facility and make sure that the prison runs smoothly.
