The South African netball squad went out of the World Cup in fourth place. Supermarket giant and sponsor of the squad SPAR has given the ladies a reward for their efforts in the game. The sponsor gave the squad R1.2 million that will be split amongst the 12 players. At first, the supermarket franchise said that it will give the squad R1 million if they won they won.
They also offered other rewards for other achievements. They offered R750 000 for silver, R250 000 if they receive bronze and R200 000 if they qualify for the semi-finals. The reward promised was, however, increased because of the appreciation that the sponsor has for the performance that the squad portrayed at the World Cup. Telecommunications giant Telkom also promised to give the ladies R1 million each if they receive gold, they also promised R500 00 for each player if the squad came back with a silver.
Telkom also recently announced, in a tweet statement, that they would also be giving each player R200 000 for their efforts in the game. The telecommunications giant says, “As you know we promised each #SPARProteas player, one million rand if they won. Even though they didn’t bring home first place, each player will receive R200 000 for their admirable showing at the recent #NetballWorldCup!” The Telkom Brand and Product Segments Executive, Gugu Mthembu, says the squad has given every girl child hope that it’s possible to make it big in sports.
“We’re proud of their performance and we salute each team member, coaching staff and management, for flying the South African flag high and giving every girl child hope that it is possible to make it big in sport,” says Gugu Mthembu.
