Couple Pays R75 For Their Wedding. They have no shame in spending that much money on their own wedding.
A couple from Vereeniging just spent R75 for their wedding day. They have no shame in spending that much money on their own wedding. Latoya and Samkelo decided to get wedded at a home affairs office instead of having a huge wedding ceremony. The couple has been together for three years, the husband knew that they would one day get married.
“From the first day I met her I told her that I will marry her and she didn’t believe me. She thought I was just another guy toying with her. But I kept telling her that,” Samkelo told ‘Move!’. At the time of their meeting, Samkelo hardly had money to go by. He went to say that he had a tough life, he had to drop out of tertiary because of money issues, he then had to look for work so that he can get some money. He then got a learnership in 2016 that gave him R2600. However, the money wasn’t enough to cover the costs of living. Latoya tried to help him where she could, even though she was relying on her parents for money.
Samkelo was then permanently hired by the institution that he did the learnership in. He got the position of Quality inspector, he also saved R500 from his increased remuneration. “I then asked my parents to go ask for her hand in marriage in Limpopo. Her family appreciated that I came and she was not pregnant at the time. Things went well. On the 9th we went to church for an engagement little celebration. Our families were both there and the pastor blessed us. We wore rings on that day and they both didn’t cost us more than R2000,” says Samkelo. The couple proceeded to go to the Department of Home Affairs for their marriage certificate which cost R55 and they also paid R20 to release the certificate.
The wife says that she does not have any shame in her choice of getting married at a Home Affairs. She went to say that she realised that when a person has no money to get their dream wedding they should just do with what they. “When we grow up as girls, we have these dreams of big Cinderella weddings. But as you grow up you realise that if you don’t have the means you don’t have to force matters. We didn’t have the money for that and we both planned the whole thing because we don’t have the means,” says Latoya.
