A man was allegedly said to have been beat up by Zulu protesters because he could not pronounce a Zulu word. The man who was beaten up was said to be a Tsonga person. Tweeps reacted to the video of the bloody man drinking pain medication.
One tweep says, “I wonder where’s the love of Ubuntu.” One tweep says he condemns the alleged action taken by zulu people. The tweep says, “Are Zulus the only South Africans, I am a Zulu but I strongly condemn this. I experienced this at school we were really teasing our fellows sothos for speaking their language at school in Durban. We would tell them speak isiZulu [you] Sotho…I don’t understand the hate.” One tweep recalled one moment when she was mistreated by a taxi driver.
The tweep says, “his attack resonates with me so much. Same thing happened to me last year, I’m Tsonga. The taxi driver physically dragged me out of a taxi, calling me “lekwerekwere” [a xenophobic word]. I didn’t even know where I was.” Some tweeps don’t fully believe that the video was from the protest. South Africans have been fighting against fellow African foreign nationals since the beginning of the month. Yesterday, people in the Johannesburg Central Business District protested just after Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi delivered a speech near Jeppestown to try and calm the people.
People that would have approached the MTN Taxi Rank and the Johannesburg Central Business District have been cautioned not to come to the area. The people have demanded that the President, Cyril Ramaphosa, and the Police Minister, Bheki Cele to speak to them with the next few hours. The people have asked the two to come up with a strategy of how to deal with the supposed impacts that they say foreign nationals portray in Johannesburg.
