Not paying for services from the government could lead to municipality halting the services they give to an individual. This is a hard thing for some people. This lesson was learnt in a hard manner by the Sandton Gautrain Station due to the owner of the property not paying up to the City of Johannesburg. The owner of the property hasn’t paid the municipality for six years, so the City of Johannesburg has decided to cut the water supply.
The Gautrain provides transportation to over thousands of individuals in Johannesburg, Pretoria and OR Tambo International Airport. Funzela Ngobeni, the MMC of finance at the City of Johannesburg, told TimesLive on Monday that the City of Johannesburg had no choice but to cut the water supply. The owner of the property is set to pay the municipality over R8 million. More measures were taken in order to get the owner of the property to pay the municipality for the services that they offer to the Sandton Gautrain station. The MMC of finance states that the records of the City show that the owner of the property hasn’t paid the money due to the municipality since it was registered in 2013.
“City records show that [the landlord] has not been paying for municipal rates and services since the registration of the property in its name in 2013. The landlord has, in effect, been receiving free services for the past six years. Following intervention by the current administration in the city, a payment of R600 000 was R600 000 was received in 2018. However, since then, no further payments were made by the landlord and its debt had ballooned to R8 million by July 2019,” says Funzela Ngobeni. The owner of the property is now needed to pay the outstanding fees before the mucipality could restore water at the Sandton Gautrain station.
