The people who have arranged the #SandtonShutdown have reportedly request for 2% from the organisations that are part of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). One of the arrangers states that they are hoping to get a type of commitment from private organisations. The money would supposedly be used to defeat gender-based violence.
Fatima Moutloatse, one of the arrangers of the protest, says,“We are hoping to achieve some kind of commitment from the private sector through JSE. We are demanding 2% from all companies listed on the JSE, which will be used to fight gender-based violence.” The arranger says that they have also issued requests for a two-day gender-based violence and femicide summit. A large number of women assembled outside the Johannesburg Stock Exchange offices in Sandton, Johannesburg, at 3am on Friday.
Bathabile Dlamini, the ANC Women’s League president, was part of the peaceful protest, asking the government to adjust the way they deal with the issue of gender-based violence. The ladies and guys who attended the event marched through the streets singing struggle songs. Some of the attendees called out the name Kwezi, the name that was employed to refer to Fezekile Kuzwayo, who claimed in 2005 that former President Jacob Zuma raped her. Bathabile Dlamini says, “We agree with the demand of 2%. Also the unequal pay for equal work, we agree with the issues of unpaid labour and the economic conditions that have to change. More budget must be put in the women’s programmes.”
