Police officials are now prepared to raid churches that are functioning unlawfully at Yeoville in Johannesburg. Currently 10 churches were discovered functioning illegally, the churches have now been closed down. The Metro Police department in Johannesburg circled in on twenty churches after there were multiple compaints from people about roads being blocked, pavements being crowded and the music being loud.
Wayne Minaar, the police spokesperson, says, “Ten of the churches were found to be operating illegally and approximately R500 000 worth of sound equipment were impounded. We want to urge places of worship to comply with by-law regulations.” The Metro Police spokesperson cautioned places of worship that can’t oblige with the by-laws of Johannesburg that there will be severe outcomes. The Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, and the Mayor of Johannesburg reacted to the busting that the occurred.
“It is SAD that we are experiencing social disruptions from churches than shebeens in some of our communities…We need to intensify our efforts for the respect of [City of Joburg] by-laws.” One tweep says, “Absolutely agree Mr Chief! Let’s keep pursuing the low hanging fruit and easy targets. Another pastor & his congregation are moved on and the good people of joburg can sleep more soundly in their beds.” One tweep says, “Snakes church…Rat church…and Doom church…Goat church. Please don’t leave them aside.”
