A 24-year-old student, Samkelo Zondi, was reported to have been murdered on Saturday. This was after he was he was reported to have been missing by his girlfriend two days before. The University of KwaZulu-Natal in the Westville campus student’s body was found severely burnt at the bushes in the campus’ vicinity.
The student is allegedly reported to have been murdered by his 25-year-old roommate. KwaZulu-Natal Police spokesperson, Jay Naicker, says the murdered student was enticed into coming to the bushes that were in the institutions vicinity. “Looking at the area and the location where the body was found, it would seem that the deceased was lured to the area by the suspect making it easier to dispose of the body…We believe he had been struck before the body was set alight, so in light of the fact that the body was severely burnt, we rely on the pathologist’s report.”
The University of KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson, Ashton Bodrick, reportedly states that the student was apprehended by the Risk Management Services. The spokesperson says the security workers saw smoke and the roommate coming from the bushes. “Risk Management Services apprehended a suspect and handed him over to the South African Police Services. We cannot continue to lose young innocent lives in this manner. Young people are supposed to focus and complete their studies and contribute to make SA a better place,” says Ashton Brodrick. The video of the student allegedly confessing to the murder of his roommate has been making rounds. However, the police have urged people to stop sharing the video due to it messing up the investigation.
