Andrew Pearse, a previous Credit Suisse Group AG banker, told the jury in Brooklyn that he got about R650 million in unlawful settlements. He got this money for his part in the organisation of loans valued at an estimate of R30 billion to organisations in Mozambique. The former banker pleaded guilty to conspiracy. The man testified on Wednesday.
He reportedly stated that at least other four Credit Suisse bankers also received millions of dollars in bribes from shipmaker Privinvest Group. He states that they gave the bank fraudulent details about the organisation. “They all played a role in ensuring the bank made the loans. They provided the bank with false information about Privinvest,” says Andrew Pearse. The former banker is a primary witness against Jean Boustani, a Privinvest salesman dubbed by prosecutors as the mastermind of a scheme to swindle United States of America investors.
The prosecutors allege that government authorities of Mozambique, investment banker and corporate heads swiped an estimate of R3 billion in loan funds. Michael Schachter, the defense lawyer, stated to the jury in an opening statement that Jean Boustani didn’t have anything to do with the sale or marketing of the loans to investors, the lawyer also stated that he had nothing to do with the swindling of investors. The defense lawyer told the jury that Andrew Pearse was testifying against Boustani to avert prison.
The primary witness told the jury that previous fellow workers, Freiha and Adel Afiouni, who introduced Privinvest to the bank also created a multimillion dollar after an organisation they started while being employed at Credit Suisse was purchased by Privinvest for over an estimate of R149 million. Andre Pearse says, “The defendant told me they were silent partners with him.” The bank, Afiouni and Freiha have not been charged with wrongdoing. It was reported that four authority members in Mozambique got millions of dollars in the form of bribes from Privinvest. According to Andrew Pearse, the son of Mozambique’s former president, Armando Guebuza, has been stated to have received about R743 million in unlawful settlements. Andrew Pearse says, “The son introduced the defendant to his father and to ministers in the Mozambique government who were necessary for the project to proceed.”
The primary witness went on to say that the then-president’s child once requested an extra of an estimate of R180 million. The man says he wanted the money so he could buy a house for a s*x worker that he fell in love with. “He was living in the South of France and asked to buy a house for himself and a prostitute he’d fallen in love with. He wanted 11 million euros to buy a house with the prostitute,” says Andrew Pearse. The son was apprehended by the law officials in Mozambique in February. He is currently fighting the charges.
