Informal settlement dwellers become homeless due to an issue with a s*x worker and her client. A witness told ‘Times Live’ that a fire began on Saturday. The fire was allegedly started by a s*x worker’s client, the worker also lives at the informal settlement.
Sli Radebe was the one of the first individuals to raise awareness about the fire that took out about 97 shacks, leaving 164 people without homes at the Jika Joe informal settlement in Pietermaritzburg. “We could not stop the fire. Many of us were unable to save anything from our rooms. Our clothes and food went up in flames,” says the resident. The residents are being given shelter at the AF Wood community hall.
The man alleged that the s*x worker had stolen his cell phone and cash, according to reports. Sli Radebe says, “The guy took petrol from his car and set alight one shack before it spread to others. My friend [the worker] managed to run away because the community threatened to beat her up.” Another community member got the chance to move away from the fire with her six-month-old child, with only the clothes they were wearing. She says there have been several fires in their area, this time around no one got hurt or died.
