A tip-off had police stopping the alleged plans of a gang that wanted to supposedly bomb an ATM machine at a petrol station in Mpumalanga. Three people were due at the Mdutjana magistrate’s court on Tuesday, they were apprehended on Monday. The three men were found close to a petrol station in Siyabuswa.
The three suspects were due in court after the police officials were informed about their alleged plans by community representatives. Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the police spokesperson, says, “The trio’s court appearance came as a result of information that police received from community members with regard to suspects who were armed with explosives and were conniving to commit crime.” There were reportedly five of them in a grey Nissan 1400 bakkie. The police officials waited as the five suspects drove closer to the station so that they could go on with their plan.
The police spokesperson says, “Upon noticing police, the four suspects that were at the back of the Nissan bakkie jumped off and fled on foot to evade arrest, leaving the driver alone.” The officials found detonators, a battery and explosives. The person driving the bakkie was apprehended for the explosives. Two other members were apprehended after an active hunt for them. The three men were thus apprehended for the explosives and the conspiracy to commit an unknown crime. The details guided them to the fourth person, who had an unlawful weapon and ammunition. While the others were due in court on Tuesday, the fourth one went on Wednesday.
