After a burglary at a liquor store in Hoop Street, Caledon in the early hours of Sunday morning, 19 April 2020, police in the area arrested four suspects for burglary and theft. Some of the stolen liquor was recovered from the suspects.
Further investigation led the detectives on Tuesday to a house in the area where they recovered some of the stolen liquor and arrested a 20-year-old suspect, who turned out to be a security guard who was the first responder to the burglary. Subsequent to the arrest of the security guard, a 36-year-old police official from Caledon was also arrested for theft and defeating the ends of justice. Both the security guard and police official are expected to appear in the Caledon Magistrate’s court today.
The four initial suspects appeared in court on Tuesday, 21 April 2020. The case has been postponed to 28 April 2020 for bail application and further investigation. The suspects remain in custody.
Police in the Western Cape undertake to deal with all individuals who commit crime. Police officials who involve themselves in unbecoming conduct will not be spared.
