On The Insider SA this week, we explore the theme of texture and meet incredible people making a living by creating something tangible. While we spend so much of our time online, connecting in the digital space, there are those who inspire us to get up and discover what’s out there in our beautiful country. This week, we get to know some incredible craftsmen who have taken their product offering to the next level.
Nick and Nichol’s
Nick and Nichol are a husband and wife team whose chosen purpose in life is to teach the coming generation skills to make them self-sustaining and sufficient. In 2016, the husband and wife duo started making their own creations after embarking on a pilgrimage to both learn the right skills, and identify the equipment they needed. Today, they are producing handmade goods and vegan-friendly products from upcycled materials like tyre tubing and more.
Karoo Looms
Founded in 1982 and previously trading as ‘Wolskuur Spinners’, Karoo Looms today is a leading weaver in the heart of the Karoo that specializes in the production of woollen rugs. Between crafting rugs, curtaining and fine weavings to a local market and later expanding to international destinations, Karoo Looms has today perfected the production of mohair rugs – and is now recognized as one of the premier crafters of mohair rugs on the market today.
Foliage
Nestled in scenic Franschhoek, Foliage is a restaurant with a twist – serving up freshly prepared, gourmet meals with a sustainable focus, chef and founder Chris Erasmus has dedicated himself to the pursuit of flavour by cultivating his menu from locally foraged herbs and ingredients under the mantra of ‘taking what he needs’.
Ennock Mlangeni
From the small town of Sasolburg comes a visual artist like no other. Ennock Mlangeni, through his passion for art, found innovative ways of uniquely presenting his art pieces using waste materials and coffee granules. These experiments opened the gateway to a new form of artistry which he can proudly claim as original – coffee art.
Capitec’s Access Facility helps Zonisele renovate his home
For Zonisele, the dream of renovating his family home was a goal that was close to his heart – from re-establishing roofing to carving out a memorable interior, Zonisele’s dream echoes milestones many might dream of, but few might have the cash on hand to do. His idea to build a better home came together with the idea of approaching Capitec Bank – South Africa’s fastest-growing bank which today has over 14 million clients – for a credit solution to bring his dream to life.
