PORT ELIZABETH – The swift response by members of SAPS Mount Road Vehicle Theft Team to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle at a garage in Kempston Road, prevented a suspected commission of a crime yesterday morning, 09 October 2020.
It is alleged that at about 11:15, the members responded to a call of a suspicious silver VW Polo with four occupants in the vehicle. On arrival, only the driver was found in the vehicle. On noticing the police, he got out and started running. He was apprehended. Prior to making a dash for freedom, he was seen throwing a bag on the back seat. A .38 special revolver (serial number filed off) was found inside the bag. The 24-year-old male was detained on a charge of prohibited possession of a firearm.
Preliminary investigation conducted at the scene directed the members to a nearby clothing retail store at the corners of Kempston and Standford Roads. The three suspects were found inside the store. One suspect (23) was found in possession of one round of ammunition. He was detained on a charge of illegal possession of ammunition. The other two males were not detained. The vehicle was also confiscated.
The suspects will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Monday, 12 October 2020, on their respective charges.
