PORT ELIZABETH – Swift response by members of the Anti-Gang Unit led to the arrest of two armed robbery suspects in Port Elizabeth yesterday afternoon, 09 October 2020.
It is alleged that on Friday, 09 October 2020 at about 16:40, three males stopped in front of a café in Old Cape Road in Greenbushes. Two got out and went inside the shop and pointed a firearm at the owner. They took cash, cigarettes and two cell phones.
A lookout for the getaway vehicle, a white Toyota Corolla was immediately circulated on all police channels. Anti- Gang Unit members were on the Baywest Boulevard road when they spotted the vehicle and a chase followed. Police fired two shots in an attempt to stop the suspects. The vehicle collided into a taxi on the N2 off ramp Uitenhage Road near Sidwell.
The driver (44) was arrested in the vehicle while the passenger, aged 34 years old got out and ran. He jump over the railings of the bridge and fell into a river below. He was found in possession of a revolver and the stolen cell phones.
The Toyota Corolla was reported stolen from Humewood earlier. The driver is detained on a charge of business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property (stolen vehicle) while the 34-year-old suspect is detained on charges of business robbery, possession of prohibited firearm and ammunition as well as possession of suspected stolen property (cell phones).
They will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Monday, 12 October 2020 on their respective charges.
