WESTERN CAPE – The South African Police Service wants to warn the public to refrain from reporting false cases as it constitutes a crime. All reported incidents will be investigated thoroughly, and false claims are usually detected during this process.
On 08 July 2020 the complainant reported a carjacking case in Wynberg and alleged that he was robbed from his Range Rover Evoke worth R1.1million by unknown males.
The vehicle was recovered on 10 October 2020 in Delft and a possession of hijack vehicle case was opened. Three males were arrested. After thorough interrogation the suspects pointed out three more suspects from whom they got the vehicle. (Six suspects in total were arrested). A confession and pointing out were obtained from the suspects. During the first appearance at Bellville court the case against the first three accused were withdrawn and the other three accused aged 34, 35 and 36 are still under investigation.
Further investigation was done, and subsequently video footage, photos and cellphone records were collected and the 33-year-old complainant was positively implicated in the false reporting of the Wynberg car-jacking case and was arrested on 23 October 2020 on cases of perjury and defeating the ends of justice. He appeared at Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 October 2020 and the case was postponed to 01 December 2020.
All cases will be centralized at the Wynberg Regional court.
