Port Elizabeth: Three alleged hijacking suspects are in police custody after the owner of the vehicle and police tracked the movement of the hijacked vehicle during the early hours of this morning.
It is alleged at about 01:00 this morning, the Jikeleza taxi driver, aged 28, was driving a Mazda 323 between NU 10 and NU 11 in Motherwell when he picked up two males. As they were driving, one of the males pulled out a firearm and instructed the complainant to drive to several places in the area. At one stage, three males were picked up. The driver was then instructed to get into the back seat while one of the suspects took over the driving. When the vehicle stopped, the complainant managed to jump off and run away. He alerted the owner of the vehicle and they started to track the movement of the vehicle. While tracking the vehicle, they stopped members of the Kwazakele Vispol Task Team and alerted them of the incident.
The members joined in the search and as the vehicle stopped near the shacks next to Monument crossing, members pounced on them. A foot chase ensued and three suspects aged 19, 20 and 23 years were arrested.
The vehicle was recovered as well as 10 cellphones, small amount of cash, a toy firearm and clothing which included handbags, jackets and shoes. The estimated value is R45 000.
The suspects are detained on charges of vehicle hijacking and possession of suspected stolen property. They are expected to appear in court soon.
