PORT ELIZABETH – A second accused in an armed robbery case, perpetrated at a garage on 23 June 2019 was sentenced in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court on Thursday, 03 December 2020.
On the mentioned date, at 22:20, the two accused Zukile Mbilini (28) and Xolani Kama (26) entered a garage in William Moffet Drive and held up the cashier. An undisclosed amount of money was taken. On their way out they pointed a firearm at a 30-year-old customer. They took her and drove off with her in her vehicle. She managed to get out of the car and the two accused were apprehended in Buffelsfonteoin Road by a private security officer.
They were detained on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping. They remained in custody until the finalisation of their case. In November 2020, Mbilini was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances and 5 years for kidnapping. Effectively he will serve 18 years in prison.
On Thursday, 03 December 2020, Kama was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each for two counts of aggravated robbery and 5 years for kidnapping. One count of the aggravated robbery to run concurrent with the other. Effectively he will spend 20 years in prison.
The case was investigated by the Detective Trio Task Team in Port Elizabeth. The investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Laeeq Weitz was commended for ensuring that Mbilini and Kama were denied bail and remained in custody until their sentencing.
