Police operations in Gugulethu, Samora Machel and Philippi East led to the seizure of two illegal firearms, 311 different rounds of ammunition and stolen property during this week.
This morning, 07 July 2021, a firearm was confiscated and two suspects aged 14 and 21 were arrested for the possession thereof. Members attached to Public Order Police were on patrol when they spotted the two suspicious looking men who started running when they saw the patrol van, but did not succeed. The firearm was reported stolen in February this year in Durbanville.
Another firearm was recovered on Tuesday, 06 July 2021 in the Samora Machel area, and a 42-year-old suspect was arrested.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate court once they have been charged for the possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
In an unrelated matter a further nine rounds and a magazine were recovered during a road block in the Samora Machel area but the suspect managed to flee the scene.
On Tuesday a tip-off led to the recovery of 287 rounds and five silencers at a residence in NY103 in Gugulethu. Members acted on information of firearms and drugs at the address and conducted a search. No arrests were made.
Four suspects are due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate court today, following their arrest for business and house robbery cases which occurred in the Philippi East area. Groceries and other stolen property were recovered in Marikana informal settlement.
