Black Twitter Reacts To Soweto Residents Protesting Against Eskom Shutting Down Electricity #Soweto. Soweto community members went on to the streets on Monday to protest against Eskom taking away their power.
Soweto community members went on to the streets on Monday to protest against Eskom taking away their power. Senior Superintendent Wayne Minaar, Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson, told News24 that the traffic has been impacted by the rocks and burning tyres in areas such as Chris Hani Road, Moroka South and Elias Motsoaledi Road. The police spokesperson says the people were demonstrating due to not having electricity.
Eskom says it is ongoing with an initiative that began late last year in Gauteng to take away electricity for people that have not been paying or those that have rigged the connections illegally. Soweto has been included in the list of the power cuts. The cutting of power comes as a solution for the Eskom to recover billions of rands that it is owed by the municipalities. Black Twitter reacted to the act of the power utility provider. One tweep says, “It’s very frustrating to live in [Soweto} right now because [Eskom] is taking us for a ride. We buy our electricity in Protea Glen but still we experience loadshedding 3 times a day.”
One tweep says, “Some of us in [Soweto] have prepaid and actually pay for electricity but it’s whatever. The least [Eskom] could do is give us a working schedule. We have business to run.” One tweep says, “Soweto residents who are paying for their electricity must channel their frustrations against those other portion of Soweto residents who are not paying electricity not eskom.” One tweep says, “Eskom should scrap the [Soweto] debt. They should rather arrest the 5 or 6 people implicated in looting over R100 billion from Eskom.”
