A bus that had passengers was on fire at the N1 north close to William Nicol drive on Wednesday. Wayne Minaar, the Johannesburg metro police spokesperson, says the bus was going from Cape Town to Zimbabwe. People were warned on not coming through the road as they fear an explosion, there was a huge traffic.
“There have been no injuries reported. It is only the luggage burning, but there is a fear of an explosion,” says the metro police spokesperson. Images of the buses passengers getting out of the vehicle and the burning bus have made rounds on the internet. Responders were at the area, taking out the fire. The Netcare 911 paramedic service spokesperson, Shawn Herbst, says they were told about the incident just before 7am.
“Reports from the scene indicate that a bus had caught alight, setting fire to the trailer. Fortunately the passengers and crew managed to escape just as the entire bus became engulfed in flames,” says Shawn Herbst. He states that the place around the bus was filled with baggage as passengers went around to get whatever’s left of their belongings. The reason of the flames is under examination.
