City Of Joburg Retrieves 44 Of 643 Hijacked Properties In The Inner City. The City of Joburg has been on a mission of giving owners their buildings back in the inner city.
The City of Joburg has been on a mission of giving owners their buildings back in the inner city. The municipality states that they have given back 44 out of the 643 hijacked buildings to their original owners. This is done in the attempt of eradicating lawlessness within the inner city of Joburg.
“To date, 44 hijacked properties have been handed back to their rightful owners. In total, 643 properties are confirmed hijacked in the City. The City’s JMPD and @coj_gfis [CoJ Group Forensic and Investigation Service] unit are committed to arresting lawlessness in the inner city.” The municipality has also asked people to report a hijacked building if they see one. Tweeps commended the mayor and the municipality for their work.
One tweep suggested that the hijackers’ information be published on a registry. The tweep says, “All hijackers that are successfully prosecuted should have their details and pictures published nationwide on a National Hijackers Registry.” One tweep says, “Wow. Finally!! This is something that is a HUGE problem in JHB. They need to inspect the buildings for safety and if they are safe to live in. This made my day.” One tweep says, “Keep it coming until you raid all the buildings in JHB.”
According to TimesLive’s 2017 article, some of the buildings are owned by criminals who have taken them from owners that have been absent or owners who have given up getting money from renting their properties. The flats are rented by people who give their money to people who own the buildings unlawfully and do not give any sort of service. Some of the buildings have been turned into places for illegal activities.
