DURBAN – Yesterday, police officers from the Plessislaer Task Team conducted an intelligence driven operation in the Pietermaritzburg CBD.
They received information about a hijacked vehicle parked on East Street. They proceeded to the said place and the driver of the vehicle was found leaning against the vehicle with a firearm on his waist. Upon checking the firearm the police found that the firearm’s serial number was filled off. A total of 15 rounds of ammunition was also found in suspect’s possession.
A 30-year-old suspect was placed under arrest for possession of stolen property as well as illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The investigation was conducted at the scene and it revealed that the vehicle was hijacked at Cinderella Park. It is alleged that on 9 August 2019 at 00:30, a motorist was robbed of his vehicle at gunpoint by suspects who also assaulted him on the head. A case of carjacking was opened at Mountain Rise SAPS for further investigation. The suspect is appearing at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court today.
