On Thursday, the first case of the Coronavirus was reported in South Africa, in KwaZulu-Natal. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases acknowledged that a suspected case of COVID-19 has tested positive.
The man suspected of the virus is a 38-year-old who went to Italy with his wife. The couple was a part of group of 10 people. They came back to the South African land on the 1st of March. A statement from the Ministry of Health states that the man went to go consult with a general practitioner on the 3rd of March. He had symptoms of fever, a sore throat, a cough, headache and malaise.
The practicing nurse at the general practitioner took swabs from the men and then sent them to the lab. The man has been keeping himself away from others since the 3rd of March. The Emergency Operating Centre’s tracer team has been sent to KwaZulu-Natal with epidemiologists and clinicians from NICD. The doctor has also been isolated since he made contact.
