Four children have passed away from eating a poisoned substance at a dumping site at Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, according to police on Tuesday. Captain Andre Beetge, the police spokesperson, says the four children ranging from 3 years old to 11 years old were playing near their homes when they ate food that they found close to the dumping remains. According to the police spokesperson there were rumours of cheese and chips going around.
“Some rumours about chips were doing the rounds, but police will only be able to get a better idea of the cause of death once post mortems and forensic tests have been conducted,” says Captain Andre Beetge. The instance occurred on Monday evening. Only one boy, 7-year-old Asiphile Grootboom, survived the poisoning after he got treatment. However, the other four children passed away.
The children that passed away from the poisoning are 3-year-old Alunamda Mqawu, 5-year-old Alizwa Rhwabiyana, 10-year-old Zintle Mqawu and 11-year-old Asive Rhwayibana. A docket has been opened for the case. A warning has also been issued to community members about the consumption of anything that is found at the dumping side.
