A 21-year-old gang member was sentenced today in the Port Elizabeth High court for the murder and robbery of a 44-year-old man which took place on 30 January 2019.
On the mentioned date at about 15:45, Immanuel Magweze dropped off three females outside a house in Barberry Drive Ext 32 in Bethelsdorp. Magweze was seated in driver’s seat of his Toyota Fortuner when two males came towards the vehicle. One of them was known while the other unknown male knocked on the driver’s side window. When Magweze opened the window slightly, the known suspect pulled out a firearm and Magweze immediately drove off. One shot was fired through the passenger front window. Magweze drove into a wall and died in vehicle. He was shot in his head. The accused then ran to the vehicle taking his wallet before running off.
On 16 October 2020, he received the following sentences:
Murder – 25 years direct imprisonment
Robbery with aggravating circumstances – 15 years imprisonment
Unlawful possession of firearm – 7 years imprisonment and
Unlawful possession of ammunition – 3 years imprisonment.
Effectively the accused will serve 25 years in prison. All other sentences will run concurrent with the murder sentence.
