The Acting Provincial Commissioner of South African Police Service in Gauteng, Major General Girly Mbele has commended the efforts of the multi-disciplinary team that arrested nine suspects reportedly involved in blue light robberies and hijackings.
The team consisting of members from the Tactical Response Team (TRT), K9 unit, Provincial Serious and Violence Crime Detectives, and private security companies followed up on information on 29 and 30 March 2022 about a group of suspects allegedly linked to a series of hijacking cases.
The team operationalised the information and simultaneously pounced on the suspects at different places in Gauteng.
The police found and seized three vehicles which were positively identified as hijacked, two more vehicles with tempered engine numbers, a 9mm pistol with ammunition, an R5 rifle with ammunition, a gas pistol, one blue light, Metro Police reflector jackets, SAPS bullet proof vests, siren speaker, a jammer and cash.
It is reported that the suspects used blue lights to pull over vehicles and then hijack them. All nine suspects are expected to appear before a Magistrates’ Court soon.
Major General Mbele has applauded the tenacious efforts of the team and appreciated the private security companies for always being available to assist in the fight against crime.
