Google is celebrating the life of jazz legend Hugh Masekela. Today the search engine has a doodle that celebrates what was supposed to be his 80th birthday. Tweeps are also celebrating Hugh “Bra Hugh” Masekela’s birthday anniversary.
Bra Hugh passed away last year on the 23rd of January. The legendary musician was still active in the music industry when he passed away. According to TimesLive, Ricky Rick said that he was working on releasing a project with Bra Hugh.
Bra Hugh was born Hugh Ramapolo Masekela on April 4, 1939. His parents raised him in Sophiatown. He was a very well-known South African trumpet player, with hit songs such as Stimela and Grazing in the Grass. He was called the father of South African jazz .The trumpet player publicised that he had prostate cancer in 2017. Even though he told the world about his prostate cancer, the passing away of the music legend took the world by surprise.
Bra Hugh has been on stage with other artists such as Fela Kuti, Harry Belafonte, Mirriam Makeba and Miles Davis. The songs of the music legend were connected to the political struggles of black people during the apartheid era. His songs were used to diminish apartheid and they were also loved after apartheid. Social media spoke about Bra Hugh, with some of them commending Google for celebrating the legend’s birthday anniversary.
