DURBAN – Yesterday, a funeral service of a taxi owner who was gunned down on 14 August 2019 at a taxi rank in Bhamshela was held at the sports ground in Mthuli area. Police officers from the Ilembe Cluster and Public Order Police were in the vicinity to monitor the proceedings and prevent criminal activities.
Police heard gunshots at the funeral service and immediately responded leading to the arrest of four suspects. Three men, aged between 24 and 44 were arrested for discharging firearms at a public area. Their licensed firearms were seized for further investigation.
A 30-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm after he was found with a firearm in his possession. The suspects will be charged and will appear at the Maphumulo Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 26 August 2019. All seized firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in any other offences.
Another firearm was seized from a robbery suspect at Ulundi during an operation. Ulundi police were searching for robbery suspects who had allegedly accosted employees at a business premises in King Senzangakhona Road on 23 August 2019. They were robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash at gunpoint.
Following the swift response, police arrested a 30-year-old suspect. Police recovered cash from the suspect and then proceeded to another homestead in the area where they arrested another suspect (37) who is also a traditional healer. They recovered a firearm with its serial number filed off, loaded with seven rounds of ammunition as well as cash concealed in a dwelling used for traditional healing.
The suspects will be charged for robbery whilst the 37-year-old suspect will also be charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They will appear in Ulundi Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. #PoliceVisibility
