Radio personality Hulisani Ravele went on to Twitter to speak about a problem that is in the creative field. She went on to say that she thinks that some of the people that were on the flight that she was on were probably drunk. She also added that ‘The Loeries’, an association for creatives , should start thinking about involving mental and emotional wellness programmes in their occassions.
“I think a few peeps were/ are drunk on this flight…The Loeries really need to include emotional and wellness talks/programmes in the festivities (if they do, that’s [clapping hands emoji]. Talking about the excessive use of drugs & alcohol amongst creatives can’t be taboo anymore,” says Hulisani Ravele. One tweep commented on her post saying that one of her clients, an ad agency employee, told her to stay away from the industry because it is toxic.
The tweep says, “I remember we had ad agency as a client and I’d be so taken by their work space it seemed like a great place to work. I told one of my clients I’d love to work here. Her reply was “stay away, this place is toxic most of the people here are on drugs, I don’t know how I’ve survived.”” One tweep says, “It’s the culture of the advertising industry. They encourage alcohol consumption and make it a huge part of the culture, this is why I couldn’t wait to see the back of it.”
Alcohol and drug abuse has been one of the largest issues in South Africa. According to Parent24s June 2018 article, in 2017 the number of patients that were admitted for drugs rised from 8787 in 2016 to 10 047 in that year. It also went on to state that about 80% of the young male deaths are alcohol related.
