Kenya has started its first breast milk bank. The bank allows assistance from women who want to help mothers that can’t provide breast milk for their children. The women provide their own breast milk. The antibody-rich milk assists children that were are sick or were born prematurely in healing quicker.
The health ministry and the African Population and Health Research Centre set up the first bank at the Pumwani Maternity Hospital in Nairobi. Elizabeth Kimani-Murage, research centre representative, he project is just an anchor into seeing if other breast milk banks could be put in place at other locations in the nation. 75 babies have gotten breast milk from 400 donors at this point. According to Faith Njeru, the head nurse at the unit, the mothers of the young ones are either ill, can’t produce milk, abandoned their children or have substance abuse issues.
South Africa has its own bank, the South African Breastmilk Reserve. Over thousands of lactating mothers have saved lives by providing milk. The milk has been used to help babies that were born prematurely. It is stated that breastmilk that is provided helps premature babies gain weight and grow faster in terms of size.
