On Tuesday, a video recording of the sighting of a tornado near Hanover in KwaZulu-Natal has been making rounds on the internet. According to news sources, several people have passed away, houses have also been ruined by the tornado. The announcement of the tornado has left people in fear.
People went on to speak about the tornado on social media. Some tweeps think the event is due to global warming. “…I vaguely remember someone telling me years ago that geographically South Africa isn’t really prone to hectic natural disasters, so when we start seeing Tornados, Flooding, Overheating we should know that things are bad ito global warming and here we are,” says one tweep. One tweep says, “And people still think global warming is a myth. If you understand the earth’s climate system you will understand that everything happening isn’t alright…this new weather pattern is bad…but nobody cares, these disasters are going to kill us one day.”
One tweep notes that South Africa is not entirely used to such disasters. “Our country is not equipped for tornados. We need to start thinking about safe houses when it hits. We must think ahead,” says the tweep. Some tweeps feel as if the SA Weather Service supposedly misinformed them. One tweep says, “Well done Mabhena!!!” One tweep says, “SA weather must be held accountable for asking people to remain calm instead [of] asking them to evacuate areas that were most likely to get hit.”
