Mahumani Secondary School in Giyani in Limpopo has 659 learners, with each class consisting 50 learners, according to GroundUp. The publication also reports that the 659 learners use one pit toilet. The school used to have two pit toilets but then one was closed in 2018 due to the crack at the building.
The Grade 12 learners are also packed into Grade 11 classrooms because storm winds removed the roofs off from four Grade 12 classrooms. The event happened in November, 2019. This made it tough for the matric examinations, the roofs have still not been repaired. The roof of the teachers’ own bathroom was also blown off by the storm wind, the toilet is used by 24 educators from the school. A representative of the school governing body, Andrew Chauke, says the education department should take the matter seriously.
Chief Hosi Mahumani gave GroudUp a tour around the school. The publication saw several flies close to the pit toilet that can be used by all the learners. Some learners opted to pee outside of the toilet. The chief says, “How can 659 learners use one toilet?” A representative of the Limpopo Department of Education, Sam Makondo, says the situation was being assessed. The school should 10 toilets for girls, four for the gents, along with six urinals, a toilet for the disable, one for the male staff an two for the female staff., according to Equal Education’s Zanele Modise.
