Johannesburg officials have apprehended about 16 people who were supposedly roaming the streets, attempting to violate the lockdown regulations. The people were apprehended when the Johannesburg Metro Police Department made a roadblock on the N1 in Johannesburg. The drivers were arrested on Friday. One of the people that got apprehended was on his way to go see his girlfriend.
The city’s spokesperson, Mlimandela Ndamase, says, “Someone has come here and told us that their grandmother has died. And then upon further investigation they have actually come out with the truth that they are going to see their girlfriend.” The spokesperson says people are not taking the stay at home command by the president of South Africa seriously. He asked people to stay at home and emphasised that the lockdown is not meant to be of inconvenience to the people of South Africa.
Mlimandela Ndamase says the police officials would go on and apprehend the people that would go on to go against the law. Geoff Makhubo, the City of Johannesburg’s mayor, was quite worried by the number of cars that were on the Johannesburg roads. He says that it is worrisome that the virus might be on the highway and sent throughout.
As we stand now, there are now 16 arrests as part of this operation currently taking place aimed at checking the compliance of Motorists with the regulations pronounced with the National State of Disaster. #Covid_19SA #Covid19inSA pic.twitter.com/C0K62a1uJJ
