People came on social media in numbers claiming that the man who shared the story of Anele Hoyana’s murder as a supposed scammer. They accused the man after he claimed to be the cousin of the man. He was even set to be on air at the PowerFM radio station. The family of the man allegedly claimed that they do not know Themba Rumbu, the man claiming to be Anele’s cousin.
This also led to some people claiming that Themba Rumbu is a scam artist. One tweep says, “That Themba Rumbu gent was quiet when I asked him why he literally copied and pasted that PMB [Pietermaritz Burg] family post from [Facebook] and how he plans on sending aid when he doesn’t even have an address but he’d swiftly [reply] to everyone who wanted to know how they can send money.” One tweep says the man shares people’s stories claiming to be a relative or friend.
The tweep says, “That Themba Rumbu guy is a scam artist who shares people’s stories as a close relative/friend in order to solicit funds from people on this App. If you think him tweeting as someone close to victims is harmless, then you’ve been successfully scammed. One tweep says, “But there was no need for Themba to say Anele was his cousin if he wasn’t. The story would have still had the same effect and the outrage would have still had the same effect and the outrage would have still been the same regardless of Themba’s affiliation to the family. See now? This are bit awkward.” One tweep also spoke about how she was allegedly scammed by Themba Rumbu.One tweep who claimed to be the man’s real cousin says, “You unfollowed me your true cousin on here so you can fake relate yourself to people…”
