A man, Radius Masukume, who got injured while rescuing a woman from people who were trying to rape her in Cape Town has been nominated for the SA Men of the Year Award for what he did. The SA Men of the Year Award began a campaign against gender-based violence in 2015. It notices men that have played a positive part in society.
People such as property developer Richard Maponya and advocate George Bizos have been recognised by the campaign. The SA Men of the Year Award chairperson, Bongani Ngomane, told News24 that the man’s action deserve special recognition. “The brave and heroic deeds of Mr Radius Masukume deserve a special recognition, nott only by the people of Cape Town but by all South Africans,” says the chairperson. Bongani Ngomane says even the awards concentrate on Gauteng because of budget restrictions; they felt the need to recognise Radius Masukume.
The man says he is very happy to be nominated, however, he would think about think about going to the awards because he has to think about the construction business. He stated that when he heard the lady crying for help while heading to work he didn’t reconsider helping her. “It’s how I was raised. I am a son of a chief. In Du Noon, women are living alone and old ladies are being left at home alone. They are being abused and raped. Maybe we can do something to help them,” says Radius Masukume. The police are still looking for the men that were involved.
