What do the police and the South African National Defence Force military officials do to the people that have not been following the lockdown regulations? Well, based on video recordings that have been making rounds on the internet, the police and military officials have allegedly been using excessive force on the people that are found on the streets.
During the weekend, there were some video recordings of South African National Defence Force officials and police officials allegedly coercing community members to do exercises as a form of punishment. In some videos, people are being assaulted by the police officials and military officials. Some video recordings show civilians being assaulted in their own homes as there are in they are in their yards. The videos have started a huge debate on social media about whether the alleged action is wrong or right.
On Monday, the leader of One South Africa, Mmusi Maimane, asked the president for the importance of minimum force towards the citizens. “…the citizens are not the enemy. The virus is the enemy. This is not right. Let’s respect civilian rights and have all security officers observer the law. Minimum force is the standard for dealing with civilians. Civilians who are cooperating with law enforcement, who are not posing a physical threat to anyone, who are not resisting arrest should not be assaulted,” says Mmusi Maimane. He says the security personnel are overreacting when dealing with citizens. He also asked the country’s civilians to follow the regulations set by the lockdown.
