Renowned choreographer, fitness and wellness coach and actress Khabonina Qubeka has joined the cast of Mzansi Magic drama series Abomama, which is set to hit our TV screens for a second season of more turmoil, drama and suspense as Tshidi, Fumane, Mapule and Dora deal with the consequences of their actions.
Khabonina stars as Tshidi, the unhappy wife of a doctor who is dealing with infertility and an unstable marriage, and is joined by Joyce Skefu (Fumane), Nokuthula Ledwaba (Mapule) and Unathi Guma (Dora) as the women of God who find themselves drawn into a world of organised crime. After they find a stash of stolen cash, they are forced to use their stokvel to launder money for the “real” owner of the stolen loot, Bonanza, played by Kenneth Nkosi.
This season, viewers can expect more thrilling drama as the women try separately to move on with their lives following the murder of Bonanza. But they are forced back together when a naked, young woman mysteriously arrives on the steps of Hope of Glory Church.
Mapule sees the appearance of the woman, who has amnesia, as an opportunity for them to find redemption for their past deeds, while Raki, played by Masechaba Moshoeshoe, is instantly doubtful of the woman. Mapule takes in the woman, who she names Amogelang, and nurses her back to health, but soon it becomes evident that there is more to her than meets the eye. Once again, their actions find them drawn back into the world they so desperately want to escape.
Qubeka is not the only edition on this season; she also is joined by Nandi Mbatha, Asavela Mngqithi, Senzo Radebe amongst others.
Director of Local Entertainment Channels Nomsa Philiso said she is excited about the return of Abomama, saying the drama offers an interesting take on the “what-if” premise of the story.
“The producers have taken a group of women that many of us can identify with and put them in an impossible situation that will make us question our moral boundaries,” says Nomsa Philiso, the Director for Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net, “As Africa’s most loved storyteller, we always try to treat viewers to compelling content that will resonate with their lived experiences in an informative, entertaining and educational way,” she added.
Khanyi Mbau, who played Tshidi in the first season, leaves the show after a thrilling first season that left viewers on the edge off the seats. Moreover, Lumka who was played by Nozuko Ncayiyane will now be played by Busisiwe Mtshali in the new season of Abomama that will premiere on Mzansi Magic DStv Channel 161 on 4 July at 20h00.
