NORTHERN CAPE – The Police Management in the Northern Cape SAPS has welcomed the 25 years sentence handed down to a 32-year-old man for raping his 15-year-old niece.
The accused started raping the victim when she was 13-years-old and the matter was only reported to the police on May 2020, when the friend of the victim witnessed the rape and told the grandmother.
On 09 June 2020, the accused was arrested. The Galeshewe Regional Court found him guilty on 24 November 2020 and sentenced him to 25 years direct imprisonment and was declared unfit to work with children and his name is included in the National Register for Sexual Offenders. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Phiwe Mnguni commended the investigating officer, Sergeant Daniel Satisfied who worked diligently in ensuring such a lengthy sentence, especially during this time when the country is commemorating the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence. The sentence will serve as a deterrent to other perpetrators of sexual offence crimes and also send a message that SAPS stand resolute in the fight against gender based violence.
