People Who Wear Red Berets In Uganda Will Be Arrested. The ones who wear the clothing will be taken to jail.
Uganda has stated that the red tunic and beret are officially military attire, this means that people who are not part of the military are not allowed to wear the clothing. The ones who wear the clothing will be taken to jail. This also means that political par ty leader, Bobi Wine, and his followers are not allowed to wear the uniform.
The opposition party leader is linked to his red beret; he calls it a symbol of resistance. The red beret was included in the first gazette of all military attire. The civilians that wear the clothing are liable to jail time that is under five years. Richard Karemire, the spokesperson of the army, says, “The dress code for the UPDF [Uganda People’s Defence Forces] has been gazetted. The action was endorsed by the top organs of the army which also commended the dress committee for concluding the task assigned to it years back. It manifests the commitment to define identity and outlook of a professional army as well as adhering to the EAC [East African Community] protocols.”
Bobi Wine in a statement sent to the AFP that it’s a try to “suffocate a successful threat to the autocratic status quo.” He says people power is above a red beret. He also added that they are a flourishing political movement that is fighting for the tomorrow of Uganda, thereby they will continue fighting for democracy and prosperity for the people of the country. The youth leader of the political party, Ivan Boowe, reportedly said that they will not stop wearing their clothing.
